Bar — Belgrade Train
One of the most famous trains in the Balkans runs between Bar and Belgrade. The route passes through mountains, canyons, and dozens of tunnels. It is a practical way to get to Serbia and a vivid experience at the same time.
About the Route
The Bar — Belgrade railway, about 476 km long, is considered one of the most scenic in Europe. The route features:
- more than 100 tunnels,
- bridges at high altitude, including the famous Mala Rijeka viaduct,
- sharp changes in altitude and mountain landscapes.
Train Types
- Night train — the main option year-round. There are seating cars and sleeping compartments (2, 4 or 6 beds).
- Day train — appears in season. The best option if the goal is to see the route during the day.
- Comfort depends on the composition: cars can be new or old. Air conditioning is usually available, but it doesn't always work perfectly.
Where and How to Buy Tickets
Tickets are sold only at the ticket offices of the stations. Online purchase does not officially work.
How to Buy
- Come to the station in advance (Bar, Belgrade or intermediate stations).
- Buy a train ticket + (if necessary) a surcharge for a place in the compartment.
- Receive a paper ticket, which is presented to the conductor.
In summer, sleeping places are quickly sold out — it is better to buy them 1–2 days in advance.
Cost
- Seating: 24–36 EUR.
- Surcharge for a sleeping place:
- 6-bed compartment: +8 EUR,
- 4-bed compartment: +12 EUR,
- 2-bed compartment: +24 EUR.
Delays and Reliability
This is an important feature of the route.
- Do not plan transfers “tightly”.
- In winter, the train passes through the mountainous areas more slowly.
- Sometimes there are technical stops.
What to Bring
- Water and snacks — there are often no restaurant cars.
- Warm clothes (air conditioning may work too cold or not work at all).
- Power bank.
Impressions of the Trip
The route is especially beautiful during the day — canyons, rivers, deep gorges and high mountain bridges. The night train is more comfortable for rest, but the visual part is lost.
Bottom Line
The Bar — Belgrade train is a combination of transport and travel. It is inexpensive, atmospheric and allows you to see the mountainous Montenegro in its scale. But you need to consider delays and buy tickets in advance.
